Merak Festival

Discover the Culture of the Brokpa Highlanders

Travel east and venture into the remote highlands of Merak, where the traditional way of life of the Brokpa communities has been preserved through generations.

The annual Merak Tshechu, also known as the Semi-Nomad Festival, provides a rare opportunity to experience this distinctive culture.

The Brokpa communities have strong connections with livestock herding and the highland environment. Their traditional clothing, music, dances and customs are distinct from those found in many other parts of Bhutan.

At the festival

The festival offers visitors an opportunity to experience

  • Brokpa culture
  • Traditional dress
  • Yak and livestock traditions
  • Traditional music and dance
  • Local food
  • Community celebrations
  • Remote Himalayan landscapes
  • The famous Yak Dance

The Yak Dance

One of the distinctive cultural performances associated with the Merak festival is the Yak Dance, reflecting the importance of the animal to the local highland way of life.

For travellers, Merak provides something increasingly rare: the opportunity to encounter a living community tradition in its own landscape.

Festival dates follow the Bhutanese calendar and change from year to year. Please confirm the current dates with our team before you plan your journey.
